There are tones of studies that show eating breakfast is vital to our health as a healthy breakfast provides our body with energy and boosts our memory for the day. But still millions of us skip breakfast everyday, mostly because we just don’t have time before rushing out the door to go to work or do the school run.
Guess what! I use to be (not that long ago in the past) one of those millions of people who skipped breakfast before leaving home and by the time I got to work, felt hungry and headed straight for the biscuit tin. Not only did I gain weight (as biscuits pile on the pounds) but my mood and energy soon dropped by 10 am and I struggled to get through to lunch time. So I decided it was time to do something about it by drinking a smoothie every morning while getting my children and myself ready to leave the house in the morning. But not only did I decided to make this change, I decided to make my self accountable by posting on social media what I was doing and every now and again I post an update of my smoothie log to keep being accountable for my healthy change to my morning routine.
So why is my morning glory smoothie a good healthy change to my routine?
- I hit my fruit and vegetables target – Its well known through studies we should be eating between 5 / 10 portions of fruit and vegetables a day and although my lunch and main meal of the day is manly made up of fresh vegetables, there is nothing wrong with adding a few into my breakfast just to make such I bulldoze my target each day of healthy goodness.
- I stay fuller for longer – Skipping breakfast and snacking on a biscuit, I felt hungry all morning. But because my morning glory smoothies contain lots of fibre, they not only fill me up and also stop my blood sugar levels dropping around 10 am.
- I am not so bloated and have lost a small amount of weight – Having a smoothie each morning before I go to work, makes me feel completely full to the point I could pop and now I don’t feel or crave the need to snack mid morning. No more snacking on unhealthy food, results in no more weight gain, win win.
- My bad knee is not so painful – Those who don’t know a few years ago I had an accident, which left me with a life long injury to my knee. I have learnt to live with the fact my knee can become very swollen after completing a full day of massage therapy. But one of the great things about my morning glory smoothies is they are packed full of antioxidants, which many studies have found to reduce inflammation.
So lets embrace our morning glory smoothie, push the excuse that we don’t have time for breakfast in the morning out of the window, as it only takes two minutes to create your smoothie. And if you are still going to use that excuse, you can always slice and measure all the ingredients before you go to bed, pop it into a freezer bag and then into the freezer. It will only take you 60 seconds then in the morning to whiz it all together.
